Latin: The Language of Rome
The mother tongue that gave birth to the 5 Romance languages that are now widely spoken around the world.
Linguae Latinae.
The Latin language.
[1 Minute Read]
As you likely know, the ancient Romans spoke and wrote in Latin.
All Roman citizens knew how to speak Latin, but only a fraction knew how to write in Latin because literacy was an ability only the powerful and wealthy had.
The Latin language later gave birth to the romance language, which includes but isn’t limited to Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian.
These are the five major romance languages, and there are many more less popular languages.
Latin was the most widely spoken language in the Roman Empire until it fell and the Romans separated into their own countries like Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and Romania.
They then derived most of the words from the Latin language to make their own words in their own language for their countries.
